Congratulations to Serge Giguère, winner of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts

Montreal, March 25, 2008 –Producers Sylvie Van Brabant and Nicole Hubert, the whole Productions du Rapide-Blanc team and the National Film Board of Canada, congratulate Serge Giguère, who has just won the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts for artistic achievement. The eight award winners for 2008 will receive the prize on Friday, March 28 at Rideau Hall in the presence of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

Serge Giguère is one of Quebec’s leading documentary filmmakers. In the course of nearly 40 years, he has made 11 documentaries and as director of photography has made around 60 films produced at the NFB and elsewhere. These include documentaries by Jean-Claude Labrecque, Pierre Perrault and Arthur Lamothe. In 1984, he joined Sylvie Van Brabant to establish Les Productions du Rapide-Blanc. From 1998 to 2001 he was filmmaker-in-residence at the National Film Board of Canada, where he made The Megaphone Reel in 1999 and Suzor-Coté in 2001. In 2006 he filmed Driven by Dreams (À force de rêves, Les Productions du Rapide-Blanc/NFB), which in 2007 won the best documentary Jutra and the Special Jury Prize for Best Canadian Feature at the Toronto Hot Docs Festival. He has received many awards, including a Gémeaux and three prizes for best medium-length film of the year from the Association québécoise des critiques de cinéma for his portraits of Quebec figures: 9 St-Augustin (1996),King of Drums (Le roi du drum, 1991) and Oscar Thiffault (1988). The hallmark of his work is the sharing by individuals of their lives, speaking for themselves while reflecting the community in which they live and work.

Driven by Dreams (À force de rêves) will have a special screening
at the National Gallery of Canada on Sunday, March 30 at 2 pm in the presence of the director.
